What size rug for living room

Select the perfect rug for your living room. In addition to its pattern and style, size does matter.

“How to choose a rug perfectly fitting my living room?”

It can be one of the most daunting missions when we decide to redecorate, renovate or move. Afterward, the rug and how it cooperates with other furniture can make a fundamental yet subtle effect on the feelings that living rooms deliver. Finding the fact that the rug doesn't fit in the living room could be very disappointing and embarrassing. So, how to avoid it?

When it comes to choosing the rugs, many people might pay much attention to patterns and style but ignore their sizes, which in fact can dramatically alter the proportion of the whole space because the carpet has the function of extending the space visually.

Guidelines:

  • Choose the appropriate one according to the size of the living room and the length of the sofa. Typical living room rug sizes are 8x10′ and 9x12′.
  • Firstly, if space allows, give 30″ to 36″ of walkway between the large furniture pieces in the living room. If not, at least 18 inches. You can use this way to roughly confirm the size when the furniture is all completed.

  • Make sure the rug is at least 6″ wider (8″ is ideal) than your sofa on both sides, especially in the extremely spacious living rooms. The function is not to let the living room appear bigger, instead, is to narrow the visitor area to a specific range, and give a sense of warmth and welcome.

There are several layouts provided to place the rug.

All Legs on Board

It is preferred in the case that the living room is big enough to let all furniture can be placed within the rug and not closed to the wall.

Remember to leave 6″-8″ between the edge of the rug and the furniture, and 10″-18″ from rug to wall(if the space is still allowed).

All-legs-on-board layout might be the less budget-friendly one, while it will contribute to a relatively more graceful and luxurious space to live in.

Front Legs Only

In the case of lacking an adequate budget or small living room size, this layout might be better.

With this, the front two legs of sofas rest on the top of the rug the rest two are left outside of it. It is the rule that the rug only goes under each furniture piece about one-third of its width.

The advantages of this layout are very immediate. The space appears larger even if it is not actually, and the furniture pieces connect more cohesively.

Besides, the rug is placed in a fixed position because of the sofa, so you do not need to spend extra time or energy adjusting its position.

All Legs Off

Here, no legs of the furniture are placed on the top of the rugs except that there is a coffee table in the center of the living room.

This layout requires a more exquisite matching plan because the rug may easily break the balance between furniture when it is connected with no pieces. But on the other hand, cleaning becomes more convenient.

A small-sized rug (such as a 5'*7') is better for this layout.
